Winnington 2s had a doubleheader this weekend playing both Saturday and Sunday. The second string started off the weekend playing Oxton 3rd team on Saturday at Sir John Deane’s. It was a tight game with Winnington starting the better of the two sides but with the game on Sunday playing on their minds they soon dropped to Oxton’s level with only a flash of the past few weeks form.
The first goal was scored by Winnington’s Matty Howard but Winnington soon fell back into bad habits and fell behind to 2-1 which should have been more but for the man of match efforts Andy Palin in the Park goal. But Winnington rallied once again to get their second goal scored by Adam Jones.
On Sunday the second team were away to an inform Bowdon 4th team in a rearranged match with a point to prove after a disappointing result on Saturday. Winnington started under pressure but did not disappoint going toe to toe with a strong inform Bowdon team and despite going one down Park never gave up.
Mark Leigh, levelled, by scoring a strong drag flick in the bottom right corner. Then Park took the lead after a spell of great pressure from the men in blue with another great drag flick from man of the match Mark Leigh. Bowdon drew level soon after with a well-worked goal. The game was then a stalemate with both teams having great chances but neither team being able to beat either goalies.
