Winnington Park hosted the first competitive friendly, forgive the oxymoron, of the summer against a Warrington XI at Sir John Deanes College. Winnington started well and passing the ball crisply and two first-half goals by John Crouchley and Alex Davies put the Winnington XI in front, but chances created by Warrington towards the end of the first half ensured the defence had to stay switched on.
Keeping a good shape and good passing Winnington took control of the match, using the wings well and moving the ball well across the pitch, it was not long before Winnington extended their lead with another goal from John Crouchley. Richard Taig scored two goals in quick succession to make it 5-0. Warrington continued to press and despite some fantastic defending Warrington managed to get a number of shots away and some fine saves by Samuel Robbins keeping the opposition at bay. Warrington's renewed pressure paid off and the away side scored a consolation goal with a scuffed shot sneaking in at the far post. Winnington regained control of the match with goals by the Wilkes brothers Ollie and then Greg rounding off a resounding 7-1 victory.
